I like to walk through the woods in the early morning. My mind is fresh, and the sun is pushing its light through the leaves from the East, casting long shadows and silhouetting the trunks in high contrast. When I squint my eyes, it almost seems like the shadows are standing up with the glimmering green light of spring. There is a neutral quality to that time and place, a quality in the light and the objects that obscure and ask the viewer what they feel. What will the light reveal? What will the shadows conceal?
\nRhode Island has almost every landscape feature you could want. While walking or driving around the state I often catch places that grab me with a strong composition. I like to photograph these places throughout the year, capturing their different moods and expressions throughout the different seasons. Spring can blush with vitality, or tease with a hint of buds in the ashen colors of late winter. Summer can flex in lush greens or collapse to beige in drought. Autumn can dazzle with a crimson laugh before the snow, or sublimely sigh into windswept rusty golds. Winter ruffles its white feathers into soft snowy branches, or freezes the landscape into the dry fur of a mouse. There are few things as epic and intimate as the scenes of the seasons in Rhode Island.<\/p>\n
